PPTA Industrial Action in Term 2 2023

Apr 26, 2023

Unless it is called off, the following industrial action is set to occur by PPTA members during the term

Greetings to families and friends of Waimea College,

RE: PPTA Industrial Action in Term 2 2023

Welcome to Term 2 and what already has the makings of a another very busy and productive term. I hope that you and your teen were able to spend some quality time together during the holidays and that they have returned refreshed and ready for the term ahead.

PPTA Industrial Action

The expired Secondary Teachers’ Collective Agreement has yet to be settled with the Government. The Post Primary Teachers’ Association (PPTA) have recently advised schools of their intention to proceed with a range of industrial action throughout Term 2.

Unless it is called off, the following industrial action is set to occur by PPTA members during the term:

Regional Strike

The PPTA has called a South Island strike on Tuesday 9 May. As most teaching staff at our school are members of the PPTA, Waimea College will be unable to staff classes on the strike day. The school will be closed for instruction on Tuesday 9 May. Limited supervision will be available for students who are unable to make other arrangements. Please advise the office by Friday 5 May if your teen requires supervision.

Rostering Home

“Rostering home” means students in specified year levels will not be taught or supervised by PPTA members on specified days. Unless this industrial action is called off, these are the “rostering home” days:

Date and Year Level(s) affected:

  • Thursday 4 May (Week 2)
    Year 11 Rostered Home
  • Tuesday 9 May (Week 3)
    Nelson-Tasman Whole School Strike Day
  • Thursday 11 May (Week 3)
    Year 13 Rostered Home
  • Tuesday 16 May (Week 4)
    Year 9 Rostered Home
  • Wednesday 17 May (Week 4)
    Year 10 Rostered Home
  • Thursday 25 May (Week 5)
    Year 11 Rostered Home
  • Tuesday 30 May (Week 6)
    Year 13 Rostered Home
  • Thursday 1 June (Week 6)
    Year 12 Rostered Home
  • Tuesday 6 June (Week 7)
    Year 10 Rostered Home
  • Thursday 8 June (Week 7)
    Year 9 Rostered Home

We ask that you keep your teen at home on the relevant “rostering home” days shown in the table above as we do not have sufficient non-union member staffing capacity to supervise the named year levels on the “rostering home” days.

Year levels who are not “rostered home” on a given day will attend classes as usual.

Please note that on the strike day and whilst “rostered home” all students will be able to access class work as usual, via Microsoft Teams.

Please accept my apologies in advance for the disruption and inconvenience that this will cause.

Ngā mihi nui,
Scott
